Yesterday I had the brainwave of making a short comic about an encounter earlier this week, for the magazine’s social media. This was rather ambitious and, unsurprisingly in retrospect, I ended up spending most of yesterday planning it, and most of today drawing it. So a very, very enjoyable day, with the sort of tiredness one gets from stretching one’s brain, learning a language etc. Since the comic is going out under my real name, I won’t post it here, thus maintaining at least a pretence of anonymity.
I didn’t use any paper at all this time, and it was quite successful. I found a good index card app which I could use to write and draw and develop the storyline – a method I learned in the excellent comic drawing course I took at the Prince’s Trust some years ago. Then I used Mediabang to actually draw it, and selfies to model body parts – I’m very pleased with the drawing of a hand holding a visiting card, I must say. Comic-y without looking like the spherical fist I usually draw.
All that said, as the picture above shows, I’ve never claimed to be particularly good at drawing.
Another innovation was to incorporate some photos, like the following. This was a particularly fortunate photo, as it both shows Istanbul and shows it seemingly abandoned, so I used to show a moment during lockdown. It was taken by the GF on my request this afternoon during our coffee excursion.
